Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where are you located and where are you providing services? A: Our practice is based in Hawaii and we offer services throughout the state via telehealth and in-person sessions. Families located outside of Hawaii are welcome to submit a contact form, and we will let you know if services can be provided based on your location and provider licensure requirements.
Q: What insurance do you accept? A: We are currently in the process of accepting Kaiser Permanente and HMSA private and QUEST plans. Families located outside of Hawaii may contact us to discuss possible out-of-state service and credentialing options or access services through our private pay option.
Q: Are your services only for people diagnosed with Autism? A: No. While many insurance providers require an autism diagnosis for coverage of Applied Behavior Analysis services, ABA can benefit many individuals looking to build positive habits, increase independence, and improve daily life skills. Our services may support children, teens, and adults who need help with emotional regulation, routines, attention, communication, organization, behavior challenges, executive functioning, and independent living skills. ABA can also be used alongside therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
Q: Is there an age limit? A: No. We provide services across the lifespan, from early learners to adults. While some insurance providers may have age restrictions, private pay services are available for clients who have aged out of insurance coverage. Both of our BCBAs have experience supporting children, adolescents, teens, and adults with individualized behavioral goals.
Q: Do you provide school, educational, or academic support? A: While we do not provide academic tutoring or educational advocacy, we can support behaviors and life skills that help individuals succeed in school and other learning environments. This may include collaboration with school teams, attendance at IEP meetings for care coordination, and support with skills such as attention, emotional regulation, organization, independence, and transitions. Additional, we can support with transitional services from the DOE to adult services (e.g., DOH, vocational, in home).
Q: Do you provide transition support for adulthood or independent living? A: Yes, we support teens and adults with building independence and life skills related to adulthood, including routines, organization, communication, community safety, self-advocacy, vocational readiness, and daily living skills. Services are individualized based on each client ’s goals and level of support needed.
Q: How do I get started with services? A: The first step to get started with services would be to fill out the short form on our "Getting Started" page. After the form is completed, we will contact you within 24-48 hours to schedule your free, 60 minute consultation.
Q: What does the intake process look like? A: The first step is a free 60-minute consultation to determine whether our services are a good fit for your family’s needs. For insurance-funded services, we will request authorization from your insurance provider before completing the assessment process. Starting services typically takes about 4–6 weeks. For private pay services, we can schedule the intake process shortly after the consultation, with services typically beginning within 2–4 weeks.
Q: What is the role of a BCBA vs. an RBT? A: A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) oversees your child’s care by completing assessments, developing treatment goals, monitoring progress, and providing parent guidance and supervision. An RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) works directly with your child during sessions to help teach and practice the goals created by the BCBA. The RBT is supervised regularly by the BCBA to ensure quality and consistency of care.
Q: What does neurodiverse affirming care mean and how is it applied to parent consultation? A: Neurodiversity-affirming care means we respect and support each individual’s unique way of thinking, communicating, and experiencing the world. In parent consultation, this means we focus on building meaningful skills that improve quality of life while honoring the child’s identity, preferences, strengths, and needs. Our goal is to collaborate with families to create supportive, practical strategies rather than trying to make a child appear “less autistic” or mask who they are.
Q: What can be expected with parent consultation with The Behavior Hive? A: After identifying goals that are most important to you and your family through an individualized assessment, parents will meet with their assigned BCBA to learn practical, evidence-based strategies rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis principles. Families will receive ongoing support through discussion, coaching, modeling, and feedback, along with access to visual resources such as videos, informational handouts, after-session notes, and learning activities and quizzes through ACHIEVE Parent Training Curriculum. Our goal is to provide families with tools that feel realistic, supportive, and easy to apply in everyday life.
Q: If I am on a waitlist with other companies, can I still complete parent consultation with The Behavior Hive in the meantime? A: Yes. Parent consultation can be a valuable way to begin receiving support while waiting for additional services. Families can learn practical behavioral strategies and tools to start addressing the goals most important to them at home and in the community. We believe parent involvement is one of the most important factors in creating meaningful and lasting progress. Once your child is ready to begin services with another provider, we can also help coordinate care and share relevant information to support a smooth transition and help maintain progress already made.
Q: We just received a diagnosis, what supports can The Behavior Hive provide us while we navigate the next steps? A: Receiving a diagnosis can feel overwhelming, and we are here to help families navigate the process with confidence and support. The Behavior Hive can help families understand available services and resources, provide guidance on starting the IEP process, discuss questions to ask providers, and support families in identifying the next steps that best fit their child’s needs. Our goal is to help families feel informed, empowered, and supported as they navigate services and plan for the future.
